| Plant Breeding |
Ever since man discovered agriculture more than 10,000 years ago, the process of selecting the most appropriate plants for cultivation has been ongoing. This work, initially based on experience, has evolved into a veritable "green revolution" in our times thanks to the application of scientific methods.
The investigation and obtainment of new plant varieties is an enormously important activity for the agrarian and economic development of society based on the technological innovation on which the entire food chain depends.
Thanks to this work, the increase in production has been spectacular and many agricultural problems have been resolved: product quality, unitary crop yields, resistance to diseases and plagues and to adverse conditions, ease of mechanisation, beauty and harmony of shapes and colours, etc.
But the development of new plant varieties is a complex and extremely costly endeavour: the choice of the parental lines that can transmit the desired characteristics, cross-breeding, subsequent selection and treatment, etc. are activities which, depending on the species, can take up to 10 or 12 years and involve costly investments in materials and technical personnel, bringing the average cost of putting a new variety on the market to several million euros. |
